NOISE x Band of Doodlers: 52 Tails @ Bras Basah Complex (Oct 29-Nov 5, 2017)
Launched on October 29th at Bras Basah Complex, is the “NOISE x Band of Doodlers: 52 Tails” Community Art Exhibition (ground floor, right outside the “Cheers” store), whereby selected youth artists’ themed artworks are on show, until November 5th, 2017.
This “pop-up exhibition” was borne of the Mentorship Program from NOISE x Band of Doodlers, and you can check out where else around Singapore you can find more showcases, including at Our Tampines Hub, Cheng San Market (still ongoing), and as-yet-announced Temasek Polytechnic.
Meanwhile, scroll thru from snaps of the exhibit and artwork seen at Bras Basah Complex (snapped on Sunday, after everyone had left, unfortunately), along with text/info (from the event’s Facebook page). As well ll images here has since been uploaded HERE on the TOYSREVIL-Facebook (Do feel free to tag yourselves, if you are the original artist, thanks!)
DESCRIPTION: "As we celebrate Singapore’s 52 years of nation building, let’s go back to how Singapore got its present-day name. Legend has it that in the 13th century, the ruler of the Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra landed on Temasek island during an expedition. As his crew set foot on the beach, he spotted a strange unfamiliar beast from afar – a Singa, or lion."
DESCRIPTION: "The word Singa is derived from the sanskrit word, meaning Lion. However, what Sang Nila Utama saw was described as an animal with a red body, black head, and white breast. This has also been speculated to be the janggi, a mythical creature.
In Batak folklore, the Singa is a mythical creature with an elongated face, big bulging eyes, a well-defined nose, and long spiralling beard. Singapore is also unlikely to have housed actual wild lions, so what was sighted could have also been a Malayan Tiger!"
DESCRIPTION: "The task: Re-envision Sang Nila Utama’s landing and encountering of the Singa were he to have arrived in modern day Singapore. The final image must contain:
-Your impression of Sang Nila Utama
-Your interpretation of the Singa that Sang Nila Utama spotted
-An iconic setting in Singapore, e.g.:
-A hawker centre
-One of Singapore’s tourist attractions
-Heartlands (HDB estates, MRTs, schools)
-Singapore’s Marina waterfront"
